Different Haystacks
Haystacks is deconstructed taco salad that Seventh-day Adventists eat. I had haystacks flashbacks at the United Methodist Church today. A quick post.
I, an ExAdventist, am having flashbacks to the Seventh-day Adventist classic potluck meal, haystacks.
Here’s my meal today:
Except this is a United Methodist lunch. I attend this church for community; where I live, church is one of the few places regular community is. I chose the liberal, LBGTQIA+ affirming church. They have rainbows everywhere at church.
Some differences between the SDA church I grew up in and this church:
* An unbaptized hungry preschooler was given communion bread and grape juice for snacks during church, no big deal.
* There’s beef in the chili. Adventist chili is vegetarian.
* It’s called “taco salad”, not “haystacks”.
* Not much love bombing. This means I have to find the people and strike up my own conversations. It’s a bit awkward.
* A ceremony, to remember loved ones who have died, at church today. I skipped this. I'm still mourning and I can't.
* Trick-or-treating at church today. Costumes encouraged.

forever haystacks. haystacks forever.
